Happy new year guys!

How was New Year's Eve? Did you party? I relaxed at home during New Year's Eve. And a New Year's vacation.

Putting that aside, Do you know that there is a culture called “Hatsumu” in Japan?

Hatsuyume (First Dream of the Year)
Hatsuyume refers to the first dream you see in the New Year, and in Japanese culture, it is believed to symbolize what kind of year lies ahead. This dream is traditionally considered to be the one seen on the night of New Year's Day (January 1st to 2nd) or the following night (January 2nd to 3rd).

In modern Japan, a dream seen on January 2 or 3 is considered the first dream of the year. However, this is only a general definition, as there are various theories as to what night is the first dream of the New Year.

Hatsuyume is the first dream of the year, and in Japan, its content is thought to signify one's fortune for the upcoming year.

Symbols of Good Fortune (Traditional Elements)
In hatsuyume, the following are considered auspicious if they appear:

Mount Fuji: A symbol of Japan, representing grandeur and prosperity.

A hawk: Signifying strength and lofty ambitions.

An aubergine: Associated with the word "to achieve" (nasu in Japanese), symbolizing success and fulfillment.

If you dream of these elements, it is believed that you’ll have a very lucky year.

Cultural Background

  • The tradition of hatsuyume is said to date back to the Heian period (794–1185), and it remains an enjoyable part of New Year's customs today.
  • There was even a practice of placing a picture of Mount Fuji or other auspicious symbols under one’s pillow to encourage good dreams.

Comparison with European Culture

"In Europe, people might set New Year's resolutions or consult fortune-telling for a glimpse into their future. In Japan, dreams serve this purpose."

We call "Ichi-Fuji, Ni-Taka, San-Nasubi"

I hope you have good dreams tonight. Have a good night.
